Newspaper: Armenia officials try to persuade university rectors ahead of snap parliamentary election

26 May 2021, 12:24 - NovostiNK
Zhoghovurd newspaper of the Republic of Armenia (RA) writes: According to Zhoghovurd daily’s information, RA Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan and RA Government Chief of Staff Arsen Torosyan are currently meeting with Armenia’s [university] rectors.

We learned from well-informed sources that Avinyan and Torosyan meet separately with the rectors and ask [them] to be with them during the NA [National Assembly] snap elections to be held on June 20, to work to bring them votes, or at least to show neutrality and not support any political forces.

According to our information, there were rectors who even turned down the invitation of Avinyan and Torosyan to meet, and stated that they had no desire to talk to them. And some of the rectors ruled out that they will work, make some compromises with them.

The rectors noted that they have spoken many times about the [need for the] resignation of the [incumbent] authorities and they are of that opinion now, too; that is, it turns out that two prominent figures in the government are busy persuading various officials, putting pressure on them so that they secure votes for their [ruling] party [in the forthcoming election].
