Bloomberg: Biden considers lifting Iran's burden without lifting key sanctions

7 February 2021, 13:31 - NovostiNK
The administration of US President Joe Biden is considering ways to ease Iran's financial burden without lifting crushing economic sanctions, including oil sales, as a step towards rebuilding the 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by former President Donald Trump, Bloomberg reported.

Some options that US officials are debating include providing support for lending to Tehran from the International Monetary Fund to ease the coronavirus situation and easing sanctions that have hampered international aid to Iran on coronavirus. Such steps may be justified on humanitarian grounds.

President Joe Biden could also sign an executive order overturning Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal. But the issue of lifting the sanctions, which allows Iran to sell oil on the international market, is currently not being seriously considered, according to sources.

In recent months, both Europe and the Democratic camp have pondered a lot about a number of urgent measures that the US can realistically take, said Ellie Geranmayeh, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa program. She described the ideas under consideration as measures that can still bring tangible relief to Iran.

The resurgence of the Iran deal has been one of the Biden administration's most high-profile foreign policy challenges, part of a slew of moves to halt or reverse initiatives backed by Trump's national security team. This includes freezing planned troop reductions in Germany, abandoning support for Saudi Arabia's offensive actions during the Yemen war, and redefining the previous administration's ties with North Korea.
