Armenia, France FMs discuss matter of returning of POWs

Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ara Aivazian on Thursday had a telephone conversation with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

The interlocutors touched upon the post-war situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict zone, regional security, and peace.

Presenting the course of implementation of the provisions of the November 9 trilateral statement on ceasefire and the deployment of Russian peacekeepers in Artsakh, Minister Aivazian drew the attention of his French counterpart to the need to fully address humanitarian issues, in particular the repatriation of POWs and detainee civilians.

The FMs of Armenia and France exchanged views also on the steps being taken to address the current humanitarian crisis in Artsakh, emphasizing the need for the engagement of international organizations in this process.

Among other key topics of the conversation between Ministers Aivazian and Le Drian were the steps that need to be taken to preserve the Armenian historical, cultural, and religious heritage in the Artsakh territories that are now under the Azerbaijani control, and the respective role of specialized international organizations. FM Aivazian stressed that the urgency of this matter is further emphasized considering Azerbaijan's efforts to destroy the Armenian heritage and distort its national identity.

During the telephone conversation, they reflected also on the need for the resumption of the Karabakh peace process within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the upcoming schedule of the Co-Chairs in this regard.

The interlocutors exchanged views also on a number of issues on their bilateral agenda and the need to intensify the dialogue.
